What is StumbleUpon?
StumbleUpon defines itself as an utility/web browser plugin that helps Internet users to discover and shares great website. Instead of using a search engine, Internet dwellers can now stumble upon websites that are related to their interest via StumbleUpon.

How Do I Stumble?
Get yourself registered and become a member of StumbleUpon. Shown below is a screenshot of the form and details required for registration:

Once you have filled up the necessary details, click the Join & Download button. To start stumbling, you are required to download the StumbleUpon(SU) Toolbar, which would then be installed automatically to your web browser (Firefox or Internet Explorer).

StumbleUpon Toolbar

Restart your web browser once the toolbar installation is done. Next, sign in to the SU Toolbar and you are ready to go stumbling!

Start stumbling by clicking on the Stumble! button. If you like to stumble sites of related interest, click on the All dropdown button and select the topic/topics which your desire to stumble upon. Once you've selected the topic of your liking, click the Save Setting button and start stumbling. Topics available for stumbling are shown in the screenshot below:

What's with the "I like it!" Button located on the SU Toolbar?

This function allows you to rate and submit websites that you find interesting or worthy of a place in StumbleUpon's database.

Say for example I randomly come across BlogMalaysia.com (not from stumbling) and I find it particularly useful for Malaysian bloggers. By clicking on "I like it" button, I am actually submitting BlogMalaysia.com to StumbleUpon's database, making it available for other stumblers. Note that each submission you make requires you to write a short review and select a related topic. (Here's a screenshot of the submission form)

Other Features available on StumbleUpon Toolbar
1. Send to - Share a site that you have stumbled across with your friends
2. Favorites - Contains a list of sites that you have rated with the "I like it" button
3. Friends - Find your friends who are also StumbleUpon members.
4. Tools - A drop down list for you to report "bad" sites, change your password, sign in or sign out, invite friends to join StumbleUpon and some other minor functions.

Bloggerfocus Summarizes StumbleUpon.com
The introduction of StumbleUpon has added a new dimension towards the usual web searching via search engine. Instead of browsing through the pages provided by search engines, using StumbleUpon to discover websites allows you to discover more "unknown" websites that have related contents. As we all know, search results from search engines are normally dominated by well established websites. This makes it harder for users to find lesser known or should I say unknown websites with related contents. With StumbleUpon, anyone and everyone has an equal chance to discover websites that we once thought never exist.

As an added bonus, you can also add newly discovered websites to StumbleUpon's database. Adding a site to StumbleUpon and rating it can be viewed as giving recognition and appreciating the site author for producing an article that has helped you in someways. Furthermore, when you add a site to StumbleUpon, you are in fact sharing something beneficial with other stumblers with similar interest. Good karma I would say!

It's pretty much obvious that both the above mentioned features are benefiting everyone in general. Members get to discover new contents while webmasters get the recognition for providing them. Win-win situation for everyone, I would say.

Till the next time, cheers and happy blogging!

StumbleUpon Traffic Revealed

Posted by sksee82 | 10:16 PM | , , | Comments

I've been rather curious about how StumbleUpon traffic works. Based on Bloggerfocus' traffic stats, I noticed that traffic coming from StumbleUpon tend to occur in periodic spikes. Let me explain what it means by periodic spikes using the example below:

Day 1 : Receives 5-10 unique visitors via StumbleUpon at one go.
Day 2 : No traffic from StumbleUpon.
Day 3 : Yet again no traffic from StumbleUpon.
Day 4 : Receives a different set of 5-10 visitors from Stumble.
Day 5 : No traffic from StumbleUpon.
Day 6 : No traffic from StumbleUpon.

As you can see from the above example, traffic from StumbleUpon are not consistent and tend occur in periodic spikes. That led me to contact the StumbleUpon team for further clarification about these so called "traffic spikes". Shown below is the screenshot of the feedback form I sent to StumbleUpon, dated 10th of April 2008.

Graciously, Julie from StumbleUpon.com was nice enough to reply to my query via email on the 15th of April 2008.

And now you know how StumbleUpon traffic works!
