Top 3 Website Graders For Your Blog

Posted by sksee82 | 11:52 PM | , , | Comments

There are probably tons of website graders on the Internet. Personally I would recommend these three sites if you like to discover more about your blog's stats, performance and ratings:

1. DnScoop
Excellent web grading site that outputs details such as domain age, pagerank check, inbound links, traffic rank, domain name ip, link value report and site value report. The main attractions for this site would come from the link value report and site value report. Check out the screenshots below:

2. SEOmoz
Another excellent web grader that tells you the page strength of your blog or site. Find out the relative importance and visibility of a webpage, the potential strength and ability of a page to rank in the search engine as well as data on popularity, links plus mentions of the page across the web. Check out the screenshot of SEOmoz as shown below:
3. Website Grader
The best web grading site on the internet in my opinion. Detailed report with lots of information on your blog's such as on-page SEO, off-page SEO, blogosphere report, social mediasphere report and competitive intelligent report. The plus point for Website Grader is that they include recommendation on how to improve your blog based on the outcome of the grading. Some screenshots of Website Grader below:

Give each one of them a try and be amazed to discover information that you never knew existed about your blog. By the way all three website graders are FREE to use.

Cheers and happy blogging!

Title or Contents First?

Posted by sksee82 | 9:49 PM | , , , | Comments

This is one of those rare moments where I tend to sit down, with nothing in mind and start typing whatever that comes across my mind. In fact, I don't even have a title for this post yet.

Speaking about title or headline for a blog post, I tend to...wait I should rephrase that with "I always" pick a title only after completing my blog post. Although somewhat similiar to having my main course first and appetiser later, I have my reasons for doing so. I meant reasons for blogging first and title selection later, not the part about how I finish my food.

When I first started blogging four years ago, there's always this tendency of me trying to come up with an eye catching, mind blowing or This Will Make You Say "Wow" title before actually attempting to write a post about it. I was like, Hey with an awesome title, I'm pretty sure the ideas will flow naturally once I start writing! That's when the problem starts.

The first couple of lines were easy as it involves the introduction of the title. When I wanted to blog about the contents, I stopped! Was I suffering from a writer's block? I seriously doubt that. The real truth? I had little idea on what to write about this "awesome" title. Feeling that the brilliant title should not go to waste (after all the brain juice I've lost in trying to come up with this title), I resorted to expand what little idea I had thought of earlier. This turned my blog post into a full blown "grandmother story" which is long winded and had little or no substance. (I'm sorry grandma if I've offended you. I hope you understand. :) )

A perfect blog post should always be packed with contents and encased with a powerful and captivating title. When a blogger chooses a title before thinking of the contents, the first mistake is made. Say for example, you have a personal blog and you see today's headline that Obama has won the Democrat Presidential Campaign. Something in your mind snap, a bulb lit and you immediately see this great title flashing before you, "Obama Kicks Butt, McCain's Ass Next!". Impressive title eh? Yet do you honestly believe you could produce a post with contents to match this title if you start writing now?

Another point I would like to stress is coming up with an excellent title yet having nothing in the contents to feed their expectations. If the shoe is too big, try getting a smaller one. Forcing yourself to wear them will only result in you tripping over, sooner or later. The same applies to your blog, if you don't have the contents that will satisfy your readers, don't trick them into reading by putting up a great title. By the way, my congratulations to you for taking the first step towards an early demise for your blog.

I admit I'm being a little long winded on this whole title selecting and blog post thingy. I hope I've got a few pointers across for newbie bloggers. I honestly can't teach you how to blog, yet I hope that everytime you blog, go for the contents first. I've emphasize the importance of contents so many times in my previous blog posts that I'm beginning to sound like a nagging grandmother! Remember, the title of a post is only the cosmetic, true beauty lies in the contents of your post.
Till my next post, cheers and happy blogging!

5 Reasons Why Blog Linking Is Good For Your Blog

Posted by sksee82 | 4:35 PM | , , | Comments

1. Blog linking increases the Technorati Authority of your blog. Authority at Technorati is measured by the number blogs pointing/links to yours.

To prevent the problem of spam linking, an Authority points are calculated based on the number of blogs that links to you. Even if there are 200 links pointing to you from a particular blog, the Authority point is still counted as one. Read about Technorati Authority here.

2. Boost your Google Page Rank via blog linking. Part of the formula used by Google to determine the Page Rank(PR) of a blog involves calculating the number links pointing to that blog.
Although there's always the issue of link spamming(also called spamdexing) that Google is trying to overcome, I doubt it should be of any concern to you unless you're spamdexing as well. My only advise is to build more credibility for your blog and the links will eventually come from your readers and fans.

3. Discovering that other blogs are linking to your blog is a great confidence booster. In some ways, links from other blogs are seen as the ultimate recognition for a well written post or article.

4. In the virtual world of blogging where physical contact is not possible, handshakes and hugs between new found blog friends are made via blog linking.

5. Sharing your readers with blogs that you link to. Let your readers know that you are not stingy when it comes to knowledge and information sharing. If you lose your readers by doing so, it comes to show that there is much to improve on your blog. Blame not your readers for jumping boat(blog), but yourself for not doing enough to captivate them.
____________________________________________________________________
The list goes on! Here are more reasons on why blog linking is good for your blog. Do keep them coming and don't forget to claim your Entrecard and Beer Credits from me!

6. When you link, you build your blog's brand, because in traffic reports, blogger take notice to another blog. It really makes their day. (submitted by Drburst from CollegeIntention)

7. If you blog about a small niche, say playing warcraft while underwater and you link to another blogs about playing warcraft underwater, you will promote your whole niche, bring the google page ranks of your niche up, and bring more people to your hobby/cause/army/republic/ect. (submitted by Drburst from CollegeIntention)

There you have it, 5 simple reasons on why blog linking is good for your blog. If you have more reasons to add on to this list, feel free to drop a comment. Each accepted comment (added to the list above) is worth 50 Entrecard credits and 200 Beer Credits. I'm also throwing in a link from Bloggerfocus to your blog as well.

Till my next post, cheers and happy blogging.

Cool MP3 Widget For Your Blog

Posted by sksee82 | 9:53 PM | , | 1 comments »

This is one heck of a cool MP3 widget for personal blogs. Check out the screenshot below:

Although the widget is made for Myspace and Facebook users, it can also be embedded on other blogs as long as HTML is supported.

What you need to do to get this widget:
1. Go to this page
2. Register yourself, took me about 30 seconds to register.
3. Follow four simple steps and get the HTML code at the final step
4. Paste the code on your blog and you're done!

Blogger/blogspot users can add this widget using the following steps:
1. Go to the Layout page.
2. Select Add a Page Element
3. Add the HTML/Javascript to your blog
4. Paste the HTML code provided by the widget site.
5. Save Changes.

Click HERE to see how the widget looks like on blogspot.

Why use this widget?
1. Beautifully designed interface.
2. Easy to navigate.
3. You can personalize your own song playlist.
4. Fits perfectly on the side column of your blog.
5. A search function that allows you or your readers to search for songs/artists from the widget's database.
6. Songs are played automatically without the need to click on the NEXT button. Let your readers enjoy the songs while reading your blog posts.

Psst, feeling lazy to register an account?
Feel free to use the code made available from my own account registration. Of course if you do not register your own account, you won't be able to make your own playlist.

MP3 widget code:

<object enableJSURL="false" enableHREF="false" saveEmbedTags="true" allowScriptAccess="never" allownetworking="internal" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" height="430" width="264" align="middle" data="http://theaymane.zzl.org/myspace/mp3player/design/dyp.swf?id=1820"&gt;
<param name="allowScriptAccess" value="never" /> <param name="allowNetworking" value="internal" /> <param name="movie" value="http://theaymane.zzl.org/myspace/mp3player/design/dyp.swf?id=1820" /> <param name="quality" value="high" /> <param name="wmode" value="transparent" /> <param name="flashvars" value="" /></object>

Bloggerfocus' Verdict:
Must have for personal blogs.

While dropping Entrecards today, I came across Hochstadt.com who is currently running a contest called "It’s The Hochstadt.com Party Contest!". Marcus, the owner of Hochstadt.com has quite a large bag of goodies for participants to this so called "party".

How To Get Into The Party:
1. Subscribe to the Hochstadt.com Blog Announcement List – 2 Points

2. Post a comment to this blog post - 1 Point (one point per person)

3. Stumble and digg about this contest and fav Hochstadt.com on Technorati - 1 Point respectively

4. Use the below party contest image(s) on your site (linking to this party contest) - 2 Points

5. Write about Hochstadt.com and this Hochstadt.com Party Contest on your blog, linking to both this blog and the Hochstadt.com Party Contest. Use your own wording, one that fits to your audience. (It shall be easy because the above prizes fit to ALL audiences!) - 10 Points

6. Write about this blog and this contest on your blog, AND link to ALL contributors (just like you see my list above including all the prizes) - 30 Points

Bloggerfocus Summarizes:
This is another large scale blog contest that I've come across in the past 2 days. The first one was from TheNetFool.com and now this contest by Hochstadt.com. I'm not so sure about how the points work. Marcus has left a vague description about the points and I hope he clears it up soon. What I'm confused here is whether More points = bigger prizes or More points = more entries?

Here's a chance for you to try and win some prizes from all these running contest. May luck shine on ye all!

By the way, I intentionally left the Prize List for Hochstadt's party last. The list is rather long, so have fun reading what Marcus has to offer.

Quick Recap:
Although the main draw would be scheduled on the 2nd of June, prizes would also be given out over the month of April and May.

What Bloggerfocus has to say:
This is pretty impressive for a 19 18 year old guy to offer such hefty prizes in a bid to get subscribers and traffic. As a finance student at Penn State University, I'm not surprised that Jim has managed to launch such a large scale event/contest for TheNetFool.com. Just like the principle of investment goes, the bigger the risk the higher the rewards!

1. Place hidden text or links on your blog.
You think you can outwit Google by changing your text color to blend with your blog's background? Perhaps hiding your text behind images might go unnoticed? How about shrinking those fonts to a size zero? Many in the past have used these methods to boost their blog's ranking for Keyword searches in Google, yet a few or perhaps none that actually succeeded. Care to try?

2. Sending automated queries to Google
Google hates to be disturbed. If you intend to see them, make an appointment first.

3. Stuffing your blog with keywords
"I love to Blog and I want my Blog to be read by Blog readers who love to Blog. Blog is good, Blog is great, Blog is all I wish to have" is a classic example of stuffing your blog post with the keyword Blog. Although it sounds like a retard writing and repetiting over how much he or she loves Blog, it worked great to boost a site's search rank when it was first abused. Another method is to flood your meta tags with the same keyword. Try repeating the same keyword for a thousand lines in your meta tag and I'll guarantee you that your blog would never see another viewer from Google again, ever!

4. Duplicating your contents
This is another method to get your blog banned from Google. Say you write an article about how good looking you. Finding that one blog ain't enough to tell the whole world, you create 10 clone blogs that contain the same articles as the first one. Put yourself in Google's shoes, would you read a same article about "how good looking someone is?" 11 times over without getting irritated?

5. Making your blog a threat to readers
What I'm saying here is that if your blog contains scripts that automatically install adwares, malwares, spywares or trojans on your reader's browser, they aren't going be very happy about it. An unhappy reader is potential whiner. When Google hears about your great blog making their customers whinning unhappily, I pray that you have a strong reason later when you submit your blog for Reconsideration.

There are many other unscrupulous methods that could get your blog/site banned from Google. I've picked five that I strongly believe are related to bloggers and blog in general. The explanations above are written in a simplified version to allow easy understanding especially for new bloggers. You can get more comprehensive explanations from Google Support using this LINK

If you find your site not appearing in Google searches due to the above reasons, you can still make an appeal to the great yet merciful Google. Make sure you've removed all these so called "unintentionally mistakes" from your blog before submitting to Google for Reconsideration.

Cheers and Happy Blogging!

This is not simple copy and paste the embed YouTube code to your blog post. This is something different as it involves placing a YouTube video bar on your blog page. I wonder why YouTube does not make this function known to their users. Well now that the secret is out (ha ha), I hope you'll enjoy adding this video bar to your blog layout. Lets start first with a screen shot of the video bar customization page.

Followed of course by a short description on what customizations are allowed for your video bar.

1)Orientation
The vertical video bar displays 8 videos while the horizontal bar displays 4 videos. The size of the horizantal video bar is equal to that of a normal 468 x 60 banner, making it easy for you to display the video bar right below a banner of that size in your blog.

2)Popular Channels
You can determine what kind of videos to be on display on your video bar. Say you wish that the "Recently Featured Videos" should be displayed on your video bar, just place a check on that box and proceed to generate the code. Your video bar will then automate itself to update whenever they are new vides added to the "Recently Featured Videos" category.

3)YouTube Channels
If Popular Channels are not your taste and you wish to have more relevant videos to be on display. You can use the YouTube Channels function. Uncheck all boxes in the Popular Channels category. Enter the channel that you like and the video bar will display videos that are categorized under that channel.
Here's a list of channels from YouTube.

4)Search Expression
This is for more specific content that you want your video bar to display. Say your blog is about Britney Spears, you can enter the keywords Britney Spears in the Search Expression and your video bar will show videos related to that search. If you wish to use the Search Expression option, please uncheck all boxes in the "Popular Channels" and leave the "YouTube Channels" blank.

Once you're done customizing your video bar, click on the Show Code button. Copy the generated code and use it for your blog. For New Blogger blogspot users, all you need to do is to go to your Layout, Add an Element, select HTML/Javascript and paste the code on it.

Now you have your own video bar!
Oh, before I forget, this is the link to the You Tube video bar customization page.

If you would like to see how the video bar looks like, click here.

After 3 years of blogging inconsistently, I've come to realize that there are a couple of reasons that lead to the quick demise of my blogs. These are the top 3 reasons why:

1. The lack of readers visiting my blog. I thought I had quality content, but why aren't there any readers after 3 months?

2. The lack of resources to guide me on how to improve my blog outlook. Even if there are, some are just too complicated to understand, not to mentioned implementing them. If improving your blog is that easy, there would be not be so many sites out there offering help and advice.

3. The internet is a cruel world. I've made my shares of mistakes and got demotivated when I realize I was forever blacklisted, especially if it involves abusing advertising. Yes I admit I was naive when I started blogging. The classic scenario of having a standard template with lots of ads in it and hoping for money to roll in.

Looking back, I realized that there many bloggers out there who face the some problem as well. Then it dawn to me that there should be a site that provides solutions and advise for many aspiring bloggers out there.

That lead me to start 4u2invest.blogspot.com.

While producing articles for 4u2invest.blogspot, I had my fair share of researching and reading. The reason? I did not want my articles to be just another cut and paste from a variety of sites. In addition, I wanted my articles to be simple and easily digested by readers.

A week ago, while doing some research for my article, I stumbled upon an article about the benefits of having your own custom domain. I decided to dig deeper. 10 more related articles later, I was convinced that having a blogspot in my url wasn't going to help my blog in terms of reaching a wider audience.

I immediately embarked on a search for a suitable domain. Thanks to MakeWords.com, I was able to find the domain name that I wanted in double the time by utilizing the site's domain name generator. To keep the story short, I bought the domain, registered with ZoneEdit.com, parked my domain in their server and defined my CNAME, did some configuration to the custom domain setting in my blogger account and I was up running. (Believe me, its not that complicated to use your own custom domain while using Blogger.com to host your blog. I shall be coming up with the guide soon.)

That my readers, was how Bloggerfocus.com got conceived.

Cheers and Happy Blogging.
